Thousands of motorcycles growled through town Friday, their drivers en route to the Harley Rendezvous, a three-day celebration of American-made bikes.
Despite the Harleys' distinctive noise, the kickoff of the 11th annual gathering was quiet and incident-free.
By Friday afternoon, an estimated 1,500 bikers had set up camp at the Indian Lookout Country Club off Batter Street, according to organizer D. Kemp O'Connell, who this year got the necessary town special-use permit a month in advance.
